Postal Service request for 2-cent stamp cost hike denied

In July, the Postal Service proposed raising first-class postage from 44 cents to 46 cents as part of a strategy for dealing with a worsening financial crisis. The Postal Service lost $3.8 billion last year, and the agency has been seeking other rate increases as well, including higher fees for periodicals, post cards and parcels. By: Associated Press,

WASHINGTON - The independent panel that oversees the U.S. Postal Service has denied the agency's request to increase the cost of mailing a letter by 2 cents - to 46 cents

The Postal Regulatory Commission announced its decision rejecting the requested price hike at a news conference today.

The new rates would have taken effect next Jan. 2.

Chairman Ruth Goldway told reporters at a news conference that the Postal Rate Commission's vote to deny the rate request was unanimous on the five-member commission.

She said that in her view, the requested rate adjustment was not due to recent recession, as indicated by Postal Service officials, but was, rather, an attempt to address longterm structural problems.
The decision was applauded by the Affordable Mail Alliance, a coalition of postal customers including consumer groups, small business, chairities, utilities, national retailers and banks.

"The PRC today has helped countless businesses stay competitive and saved tens of thousands of jobs," said Tony Conway, a spokesman for the alliance. "The commissioners recognized that imposing an additional tax on Postal Service customers is not the way to address its financial troubles. Our members look forward to working with the Postal Service on the long-term restructuring needed to restore the Postal Service to competitiveness."

Military Connection September 2010 Newsletter

This past weekend, MilitaryConnection.com joined forces once again with the Ronald Reagan Library to remember the victims of September 11th and honor our troops and first responders at the 5th Annual 9/11 Freedom Walk. The program attracted over 2,000 attendees and featured keynote speakers Captain James J. McHugh, Commanding Officer, Naval Base Ventura County, actor Gary Sinise, founder of the Gary Sinise Charitable Foundation, and Scott Strauss, former Chief of the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department whose heroic actions were portrayed in Oliver Stone's film, "World Trade Center".
The Freedom Walk is a positive way for Americans with different opinions to come together and remember that we are "the greatest nation in the world". We are in this together and live in a nation where we are able to think and state our different points of view. Let's remember this more often and remember those who sacrifice to preserve these freedoms we hold dear.

Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay
Are you entitled to the Stop-Loss bonus?
Time is running out to apply for retroactive bonus pay for 145,000 military personnel who were forced to remain on duty beyond their original discharge date, following the September 11th attacks. Congress has approved back pay of $500 for each month of involuntary service; the average lump-sum due is between $3,500 and $3,800. Applications must be submitted by Oct. 21, 2010. The DoD is desperately trying to track down about 90,000 veterans. Congress ordered the military to dole out back pay to those affected by the policy dating to 2001. There are some exceptions. Soldiers who accepted re-enlistment bonuses, for instance, are ineligible. So far, the military had processed about 55,000 applications and approved $210 million in back pay, leaving $324 million left unclaimed. Submit your application online at www.defense.gov/stoploss.

A brave serviceman or woman in Afghanistan needs to hear from you this Christmas

Dear Soldiers' Angel,

This is the biggest project we've ever undertaken.

I desperately need your help to send a very special Holiday Gift Pack for our servicemen and women who have already sacrificed so much for us.

(I'll tell you a little more about some of the truly unique and special items in these packages in just a moment).

Your best gift will send one of these Holiday Gift Packs to each and every one of our brave troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, so far away from home and family on the holidays . . .

. . . as well as one for our seriously wounded men and women away from home on the holidays because they're physically unable to leave their hospital.
So would you please send your very best gift to help pay for these holiday packages?

Only you know what's right for you.  But I can tell you one thing for sure . . . we won't be able to send the 190,000 packages we need unless you and many more like you respond to this most urgent plea for help.

And that will mean that some of our troops will do without. And I can't stand to think that will happen.

You may know that this year has been the deadliest yet for our American troops in Afghanistan.

And I'm told by experts in the military that they average 10 wounded for each of those heroes who lost his life on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, the bad economy has hit us, just like everyone else, and we are struggling to raise our operations budget, even as we undertake our largest project yet.

I'm hoping you can help with this crucial holiday season project so our troops now we support the sacrifices they are making for us at home.

Now, please let me tell you how neat these Holiday Gift Packs really are.

Each one will have "comfort items," such as food, drink mixes, socks, stainless steel mugs, and other gift items.

But the truly unique item is a full-size handmade "Blanket of Belief," lovingly prepared by one of our Angels.

Why do we call it a "Blanket of Belief"?  Because we want our servicemen and women to get one message loud and clear: "We Believe in You."

That message is so important because, frankly, some of our troops are starting to wonder if we at home are behind them, especially in an age when their military service and mission are constantly being questioned and criticized.

So please, will you make your very best tax-deductible gift for our men and women overseas?

Each Holiday Gift Pack costs about $16.  So if you could give at least that much, or even $32 or $48 to pay for a couple more.

Perhaps you could even give $100, $500, or even $1000 to help make up for those who can't give as much.

Whatever you can best afford, you'll be helping a young man or woman far from their family this Christmas.

This Holiday Season, 190,000 men and women will need your help, prayers, and encouragement.   And believe me, they'll be so grateful.

They've been there for us. Will you be there for them?

                                                                      Sincerely,

                                                                      Patti Patton Bader
                                                                      Founder, Soldiers' Angels

P.S.     I really need to hear from you . . . but most importantly, our men and women separated from their families need to hear from you this Christmas holiday season.

Nearly 190,000 of our troops need to receive a Holiday Gift Pack this coming Christmas season.  If you could send $25 or more that would be such a blessing.

But the important thing is that you send whatever you can to help with this important and groundbreaking project.  Thank you so much!

Double Up on Troop Support!

Dear Angels,

This weekend, you can support the troops two ways at once!  A cup of coffee for a hero can also mean donations to help Soldiers' Angels continue to support that hero long past the last drop of delicious coffee...

The Cup of Joe project by Green Beans Coffee allows anyone, anywhere in the world, to say thanks to the troops through the simple act of buying a cup of coffee online and having it delivered along with their own personal note of encouragement into the hands of a deployed Soldier.

In honor of those who have served since 9-11-01, Green Beans is donating $1 for every dollar spent on "Cup of Joe for a Joe." It begins at midnight on Friday, and ends at midnight on Sunday.

To donate a Cup of Joe for a Joe… and help SA support more troops at the same time, go to www.greenbeanscoffee.com/coj.  Remember, it starts at midnight tonight. For details, click here

On this weekend of remembrance, our hearts go out to all who lost someone in the attacks of 9-11-01, and all who have served and sacrificed since that day.

Commemorate September 11 through Volunteering with Soldiers' Angels

911 Day of Service

In 2009, President Barack Obama formally recognized September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. As this day approaches, we encourage individuals and families to support charitable causes, volunteer, and engage in other service activities in observance of the anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy...and rekindle the spirit of hope and community that followed the terrorist attacks.

Did you know?*
  • 2,819 people were killed in the attacks
  • 343 of them were firefighters and paramedics
  • 20% of Americans knew someone hurt or killed in the attacks
Independent research conducted in 2010 by MyGoodDeed found that more than 60 percent of Americans today—and 84 percent of those between ages 18-35—are ready to commemorate 9/11 through acts of charitable service or volunteerism.

Send Your Signature to Support the Troops!

Dear Angels,

We are calling on all of you to please use your signature to help make this 5th Annual Day of the Deployed on October 26 the biggest ever.

The fighting in Afghanistan is at its worst, and though we are moving out of Iraq, about 50,000 American heroes in support roles there are still wishing for home.

This is the time to generate so much enthusiasm and support for the troops that they hear about it all the way across the ocean and know that we love them, appreciate their sacrifice, and will never forget their service.

Please sign the Day of the Deployed proclamation to reaffirm your patriotism and allegiance to our flag and country, and to honor our brave men and women in uniform who are selflessly putting their lives on the line to protect and preserve our way of life.

Imagine what it can do for morale to see hundreds and thousands—even millions—of Americans stand up and show that they recognize the hard work, dedication and commitment of America's Armed Forces!  Please sign the proclamation, then join us in showing your support on October 26, 2010 (see www.soldiersangels.org for participation ideas).

Let's salute our heroes on the 5th Annual Day of the Deployed!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MFN TEAM
As the dog days of summer come to an end and autumn closes in on the horizon, we begin to feel a sense of urgency for summer projects left undone and the clear knowing that as the new school year begins and the holiday seasons unfold, that our lives will become busier and our time more treasured.
How different from only weeks ago!
When spring approaches, with its newness and hope, we are energized and inspired to think big thoughts with confident can-do attitudes: "Sure, I'll clean out that garage and attic! Yes, I'm tackling that family photo project! You bet it'll be my best garden ever!" "Second language? No problem!"
And, it's all going to happen this summer.
But fall, always serious and overshadowing, seems to sneak up on us with a rush of duty, leaving us scrambling to tie up matters, finish projects, "store away our acorns for the winter" and get the kids in bed on time.
Then, more quickly than the blink of an eye, August comes rolling around and reality sets in. It's a sobering moment: "Where has all the time gone?"
No doubt about it: August is a transitioning month. But if we stop there, we miss out on some very important gifts that this month has to offer.
August gives us an opportunity to review and reflect about our summer accomplishments and our memories of recent vacations - far from home, close to home, across the street in the neighbor's pool, or just hanging out watching glorious sun sets. We get a rare moment to catch a glimpse of ourselves enjoying our lives and the people we have in those lives. And, if we're fortunate enough to step out of the moment, we can let that vision settle in slowly, warmly to the backs of our mind to be plucked later, for daydreaming, during winter's deep chill.
So then, as the world prepares for back to school and the bustling holiday months ahead, let's rest here a bit to enjoy this feeling of ease and satisfaction. We're in no hurry today.
Until Next Month (or you can email us at connections@MilitaryFamilyNetwork.com if you just can't wait!),
Megan, Luis and Darrell

At first I just skimmed through it, but when I read the contents and your instructions on how to use this book, I realize this book was worth much more than the purchase price. Thank you for providing a helping hand for our military who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. Your book it is a treasure for me and for all military personnel." - Curt M.

ASK MFN'S MILITARY FAMILY SPECIALIST
Robin is MFN's Military Family Specialist. She is a regular feature to our monthly newsletter to help connect you with solutions to challenges in your military life.
Hey Robin,
I'm trying to finish my display of Vietnam Veteran License plates and am missing two plates (AK and DE).
Do you know any Vietnam Veterans that might have old or expired Vietnam Veteran License plates? I would reimburse all postage charged & also send an Illinois Vietnam Veteran license plate for any Arkansas Vietnam Veteran plate.   Thanks for any help you can give me with my display!!
Thanks, Ray
Hi Ray,
Well, this is a fun and unusual request! Although I have to tell you, Ray, I have no experience in collecting or displaying license plates. So, the best that I can do is put your request out here to our MFN community with your email address, cross my fingers and hope that someone out there has what you need. (If you can help Ray, please email him at phawk350@aol.com .) And, Ray, if you ever get your display completed, will you remember to send us photo? Good luck!
Peace out, Robin

  BUSINESS FEATURE
MFN Helps Businesses Reach Military Families
We all know how the Military Family Network serves military service members, veterans, and their families by providing resources, information and trusted expert and community advice to help them navigate through military life.
But did you know that MFN also helps businesses with their outreach as well? By introducing the military community to trusted businesses, MFN can help you tap into a market that is traditionally hard to reach, but desires your services. And with our new website nearly ready to go, we will offer even more possibilities, both for businesses and the community we serve.
For military and family friendly businesses, we offer a variety of communication services that allow you to promote your programs, products and services while demonstrating your support for our military service members, veterans and their families. MFN encourages its business partners to offer military deals and discounts as their way of thanking our military community for their service to our nation. And, while MFN can provide the sophisticated marketing reports that you've come to expect from your campaigns, your biggest reward will come from knowing that your advertising dollars are taking care of military service members, veterans and their families. In fact, your support saves lives.
For our military community, there are numerous new features to look forward to like improved and simplified navigation, enhanced forums, the ability to add your own blog, and a dedicated server giving MFN much more bandwidth and processing power to provide you with a greatly improved user experience.
You've already seen the ever increasing number of experts in various fields who are coming on board with MFN to give you the information you need. Now, enhanced search and tagging capabilities will make it easier for you to find this information.
And there is so much more. How many times have you read one of our news articles and wanted to respond? Or perhaps you saw an informational piece on our site, and wanted to contribute your own knowledge and experience? Well, now you will be able to! You will be able to leave comments, discuss topics with your fellow community members, easily syndicate the content to your RSS feeds, and a few surprises that, well, our lips are sealed!
So as they say in show-biz: Don't Go Away! There's More to Come!

ORGANIZATION IN THE SPOTLIGHT
"Wow, you really drew that?"
The Wounded Artist Project

The Wounded Artist Project is sending art kits (currently our Beginner kits) to war wounded, ill and injured, and their caregivers (parents, spouses, etc.), recovering in military medical facilities or at home across the US.  This includes also PTSD and TBI.
While art is recognized as a good method to pull out trauma in a person's life, we will be focusing on having the wounded develop art skills that may lead them to deciding on a college major or career.  We have a YouTube channel with introductory art instruction videos for anyone to access.
We imagine that someone who does a lot of perspective drawing may decide to become an architect or urban planner; those drawing the human body (especially after following their own charts and operations) may become a medical or scientific illustrator, a nurse or even a physiologist;  those drawing cars and mechanical stuff may go into product design. We stress that the kits alone don't make someone become an architect or an MD; they still face a lot of work ahead of them.
We are sure that someone, someday will look over the shoulder a wounded GI sitting in a hospital bed using one of our kits, and ask, "Wow, you really drew that?"
Contact ray@thewoundedartistproject.org for more details and to volunteer.
How You Can Help: The Wounded Artist Project is a Michigan-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that sends art kits to war wounded recovering in military hospitals. We are in start-up mode and need funding and/or donations. They are tax-deductible.  It costs us approximately $25 to produce one BEGINNER's kit. Visit The Wounded Artist Project website to support our wounded service members or to request additional information about how you can help: this link is just a click away!
