Military Spouses Thank Gates for Support

Military Spouses Thank Gates for Support

By Fred W. Baker III
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, June 26, 2009 – Since he took office two and a half years ago, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has traveled the world talking with troops about their service and sacrifices.

At each meeting, the secretary is careful to thank the troops' families, recognizing their sacrifices as well.

Today, the spouses thanked him back.

Gates was awarded the Support for Military Families Award by the National Military Family Association at the annual Joint Armed Forces Officers' Wives' Luncheon at Bolling Air Force Base here.

"It is a difficult thing to look a family member in the eye whose spouse or father or son or daughter is being deployed again – sometimes on a second or third tour, or even more." Gates told the 150 or so spouses gathered for the event. "And it is harder to do with the families of those who have been killed or wounded."

Even so, Gates has looked them in the eyes during his travels, and listened to their concerns.

In fact, the idea for the recent changes to the GI Bill, allowing servicemembers to transfer their benefits to the families, was presented to Gates by a spouse during a meeting with families at Fort Hood, Texas.

This was a "huge" issue for families, officials with the association said.

In his speech to the group, Gates acknowledged the strain of the frequent deployments to two wars on the families.

A higher percentage of parents is serving in this conflict than any time in recent history, the secretary said. More than 40 percent of the military is made up of parents, and more than 230,000 children have a parent at war.

A recent Pentagon survey of more than 13,000 active-duty troops found that the children most affected by deployments are between 6 and 13 years old.

"A generation of kids has had a parent deployed for war at least once --- if not many times," Gates said. "The empty seat at the dinner table night after night is a constant reminder of a child's worry for the safety of his or her parents."

Because of this, Gates has championed some of the most significant changes to the way families are supported within the department.

The fiscal 2010 budget is the first budget to include funding for many family support programs. Before, the programs mostly were funded with supplemental requests to Congress, but Gates wants to make sure these programs won't go away should the heavy deployment cycles ease.

"One of the most important things we did was enhance and institutionalize the support of troops and families fighting in the current wars – to see that these programs have a bureaucratic home and sustained, long-term funding," Gates said. "Our all-volunteer force represents the United States' greatest asset. We must reorient in this direction, because … if we don't get the people part of our business right, none of the other decisions matter."

Last year the Defense and Labor departments launched the Military Spouse Career Advancement initiative. More than $35 million was invested in the project's initial phase across 18 military installations. The program promises to help military spouses get professional training, licenses and certificates they need for high-growth, portable careers in fields such as technology and health care. Now more than ever, spouses are choosing to have careers, and those careers often are interrupted by duty-station changes and deployments.

Gates also heralded the Warrior Transition Unit as a success. The unit helps wounded troops and families work through the bureaucratic maze of health care and recovery. Coordinators are assigned to each servicemember and family and they serve as a single point of contact for help.

Gates cited the increased incidents of divorce and other signs of wear on military families, but offered some hope.

"There are a number of measures under way that are designed to ease the strain on the small portion of the American people who have borne the burden of these conflicts," he promised. "I hope and trust these measures make a difference."

Soldiers' Angels asked Americans to vote a dream wedding for an Iraq veteran and his finacee'

Earlier this month, Soldiers' Angels asked Americans to vote a dream wedding for an Iraq veteran and his finacee'.  America came through with flying colors, propelling Van Ngo and Eric Oberly across the finish line!  The young couple will have a $100,000 wedding of their dreams, thanks to Us Weekly and the Wedding Channel.

Van and Eric were at first told they were simply finalists and invited to New York for an interview.  Instead, they arrived and found out they were the winners.  They were mostly speechless with shock, but during an interview Eric credited Soldiers' Angels with helping them win.  "I just want to thank everybody that voted for us. We had a lady (THAT WOULD BE ME-- SHELLE MICHAELS!) from Soldiers' Angels that got the word out and helped us gather votes…It's just fairytale."

Eric also wrote to Soldiers' Angels, "Thank you so much for posting Van and me on the Soldiers' Angels site.  It was amazing to see how many people it reached who ultimately voted."

Soldiers' Angels is proud to have had a role in helping this great couple win!  You can follow their wedding adventure on the Us Weekly Dream Wedding blog.

I Can't Believe We Won!

To this moment, I can't believe we were chosen! To even be in the Top 10...wow! Our story must have stood out, although all the other stories were so good. It's unbelievable. I'm excited. We had no idea that we would win. Us Weekly and WeddingChannel.com brought us up to New York for the night, saying they were interviewing the finalists. We checked into the W Hotel Union Square (gorgeous -- one of the nicest places we've ever stayed in), and I tried on a bunch of outfits while Eric told me what looked good and what didn't. Then we went to sleep. The next morning, we figured we'd do a quick interview, so I brought all the love letters Eric and I wrote each other while he was stationed in Iraq as an Army National Guardsman. When we were brought downstairs in the lobby, there were all these people: a television crew from Inside Edition, Us Weekly and WeddingChannel.com editors. Then they told us we won! I couldn't believe it! I can't wait to tell my family and friends. I'm going to be on the phone non-stop. It doesn't feel real! It won't feel real until the day of. I can't even fathom a $100,000 wedding until I see it. We were planning our own wedding with a much smaller budget, and we can't even imagine what our wedding will look like now.

Pen pals during Oberly's yearlong tour in Iraq, the couple are "every day people who share a very real love," says Ngo, 28. The Army National Guardsman, 28, proposed while on leave. Her response? "Are you joking?" quips Ngo, a government worker. "But I said yes!" Their ideal "I Do's" are inspired by Tony Parker and Eva Longoria Parker's luxe Parisian nuptials in 2007.

A note from eric--

Shelle,
Thank you so much for posting Van and I on the Soldiers Angels site, it was amazing to see how many people it reached and ultimately voted. We're so excited to have won. When they first suprised us, I mentioned Soldiers Angels when they asked about the support we received. Eric

Golf Gear for the Troops, Veterans

Golf center collection golf gear for troops, veterans

The Arizona Republic

A conversation with a nephew inspired Bev and Brad Lefebvre, owners of Crosswoods Indoor Golf Centers, to do something for U.S. troops serving overseas.

On Saturday, the Chandler Crosswoods Indoor Golf Center, 6170 W. Chandler Blvd. (just west of Kyrene Road), will be collecting new and used golf clubs, balls and other equipment to be donated to troops and veterans.

Information: www.crosswoods

golf.com.

The nephew, Spc. Rusty White, is a soldier stationed in Iraq. During a recent conversation, he mentioned there weren't a lot of recreational options for what little free time he and his fellow soldiers had.

"He told me they were doing a lot of weightlifting and things like that," Bev said. "I remembered reading an article that some soldiers there were hitting golf balls to relieve stress. I did some research and found an organization out of New York called Bunkers in Baghdad. They had donated over a half million golf balls and 15,000 golf clubs to troops and wounded soldier programs and VA hospitals, so I contacted them."

Bunkers in Baghdad agreed to help distribute the golf gear if the Lefebvres were willing to gather it. Using their connections to the local golf community, the collection efforts began. U.S. Vets and Soldiers Angels also are helping out.

Although the big push will take place Saturday, the centers had planned to start accepting donations this past Monday. Once the word got out about the collection efforts, however, generous golfers started donating equipment last week.

Sonja Artibise, a Chandler resident, heard about the collection drive and brought used clubs from her and her husband to the center.

"I was cleaning out my house and wanted to get rid of some of these old clubs," Artibise said. "I was going to take them to Goodwill but when I heard about this I said to my husband, let's give them to our guys and girls overseas."

Military vehicles and personnel will be at the centers from 7 a.m. through 1 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to the donations, Saturday's fun provides a chance to enjoy a taste of golf in a cool, indoor setting. Throughout the day there will be driving and putting contests, and portions of the proceeds from food and drink sales will go toward the shipping costs for the golf gear.

There will also be a raffle of donated golf items and people attending can write a note to a soldier that will be sent with the equipment.

Those unable to attend may make donations at either Crosswoods location until July 4. The Gilbert center is at 5222 E. Baseline Road (just east of Higley Road).

Dozens of clubs have already been donated at the two Crosswoods locations. Bev said she was looking forward to Saturday.

"What we already have is great," she said. "I'm a little afraid to see just how much more we're going to get. But that's a good problem to have."

A note from Michelle Obama- Serving together

National and community service has been a cornerstone of my life, as I know it has been for many Americans. And with the daily struggles now confronting so many families, it's especially important for us to reach out to one another and offer a helping hand.

I've just launched United We Serve, a national initiative to tackle our toughest problems by working hand-in-hand in communities across the country. We aim to make a real difference right now and bring more and more Americans into a tradition of life-long service to make an even greater difference down the road.

I'd like to invite you to be a part of it by joining Organizing for America's National Health Care Day of Service this weekend. You can join up with other local OFA supporters to help improve health care services in your community and make a difference as we work to reform America's health care system.

Sign up now to participate in a National Health Care Day of Service event this Saturday, June 27th.

Attend a National Health Care Day of Service event

There's an old Thomas Edison quote I've always liked: "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." It's no secret that our country faces some enormous challenges right now, and meeting them will take a lot of hard work. But in that work lies an equally great opportunity -- a chance to serve. And I do believe the chance to serve is a precious gift indeed.

Service has played a transformative role in my life -- bringing me tremendous joy and helping me find the path that led to where I am today. As a parent, I believe service is a great way to demonstrate values and to teach our children firsthand what it means to commit to a purpose beyond ourselves.

It should be a part of everyone's life. From the moment someone can walk to the day they leave this planet, service should be a part of how we give back, how we say thank you, how we express our gratitude for the lives that we've been given.

So I'm deeply honored for this chance to support our United We Serve initiative and Organizing for America, and I hope you'll be able to participate this weekend. Please sign up now to volunteer at a local event:

Thank you,

First Lady Michelle Obama

Time to roll up your sleeves

The White House, Washington

Dear Friend,

Last week, I announced United We Serve – a nationwide call to service challenging you and all Americans to volunteer this summer and be part of building a new foundation for America.

And when I say "all," I mean everyone – young and old, from every background, all across the country. We need individuals, community organizations, corporations, foundations, and our government to be part of this effort.

Today, for the official kick off of United We Serve, members of my administration have fanned out across America to participate in service events and encourage all Americans to join them.

The First Lady is rolling up her sleeves and getting to work too. But before she headed out today, she asked me to share this message with you.

A Message From The First Lady

Our nation faces some of the greatest challenges it has in generations and we know it's going to take a lot of hard work to get us back on track.

While Michelle and I are calling on every American to participate in United We Serve, the call to service doesn't end this fall. We need to stay involved in our towns and communities for a long time to come. After all, America's new foundation will be built one neighborhood at a time – and that starts with you.

Thank you,
President Barack Obama

NPR interviews Benjamin Patton- The grandson of Gen Patton

Guest Host Alison Stewart speaks with Benjamin Patton, grandson of the famous WWII general. Did you know that Ben Patton's FATHER was also a decorated general? He fought in the Vietnam and Korean wars, and sent audio "postcards," like this one, back to his family in the States.

 http://www.npr.org/blogs/sundaysoapbox/2009/06/rough_cut_benjamin_patton_on_m.html

WOW!! What a great comment. "Patton's always know when their number is up."

Weekend Edition Sunday, June 21, 2009 · Father's Day offers the perfect opportunity for the generations to pause and share stories from family history.

And when your grandfather is World War II Gen. George S. Patton, and your dad is Maj. Gen. George Patton, a decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, many of these stories are already well-known. But there's another, more personal side to the Patton family — one documentarian Benjamin Patton explored in this month's issue of Smithsonian magazine.

a daily rose

Patti-

Thank you for this great organization and the love and support we receive
from the many "Soldier's Angels" and "Ladies of Liberty". The boxes and
letter I receive are so filled with love, support, prayers and much
needed items that are hard to obtain.

I call the boxes, "my little piece of home". It is also so enjoyable to share my goodies with the men and women stationed with me. Sometimes they call me the box lady but they
always find something they want.

I keep the boxes in my office and when Soldiers come by to visit, I tell them to look through.

The generous outpouring of love and prayers from your organization and
it's members make our jobs easier and more bearable.

The letters that are written bring a little home to us. And it's always
nice to know we are not forgotten. Thank you for your organization.

I have already received 2 care packages and numerous letters.  I can't tell you
how much it means to us over here when we get mail and goodies.  It is
such a moral boost and a wonderful feeling to know we are being thought
of back home.

The compassionate support from your volunteers and
organization is outstanding and demonstrates the highest standard of
civilian service.

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

SPC Andrea

May no soldier go unloved.
May no soldier walk alone.
May no soldier be forgotten,
Until they all come home.

Soldiers' Angels is in Reader's Digest

As you know... I have been working with Debbie Tenzer in her ONE NICE THING book--

The current Reader's Digest has Soldiers' Angels in her section-- (YEAH FOR MORE ATTENTION TO LANDSTULH!!)

Best Acts of Kindness
Debbie Tenzer got tired of hearing friends bemoan the state of the world. "Instead of worrying about big problems I couldn't solve, I decided to look for the small ones I could solve," says Tenzer, 55. Now, every Monday on her website, doonenicething.com, she recommends a good deed and profiles people who do them.
She's onto something: Not only has her "kindness movement" attracted followers in 90 countries since 2005, but recent studies show that giving to others releases the hormone oxytocin, a natural joy booster and stress buster. Three kind acts from her new book, Do One Nice Thing:

For wounded soldiers: Send a handwritten postcard for them to read upon arrival at the U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. Mail yours to 21st TSC, Medical Transient Detachment, Attn: Soldiers' Angels, Unit 23203, APO AE 09263.

For the planet: Save landfill space by recycling used library, membership, and gift cards instead of throwing them away. Send them to Earthworks System, c/o Halperin Industries, 25840 Miles Road, Bedford, Ohio 44146.

For sick kids: Comfort them with DVDs when they're undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments in pediatric hospitals. Send movies to Kid Flicks/Barta, 11755 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 1450, Los Angeles, California 90025.

VA's Suicide Prevention Message on 21,000 Buses

VA's Suicide Prevention Message Carried on 21,000 Buses

WASHINGTON (June 19, 2009) - The telephone number for the suicide
prevention "lifeline" of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is now
being carried on more than 21,000 city buses in 124 communities across
the United States and will run until Sept. 1, 2009.

The advertisements carry a message of hope for those who have served
their country and are undergoing an emotional crisis.

"We continue to look for new, innovative ways to reach our Veterans,"
Assistant Secretary Tammy Duckworth said. "VA wants to make sure to
exhaust all avenues to reach those in need of our services."

VA is partnering with Blu Line Media, an outdoor advertising company
which specializes in helping businesses and government tell their
stories through educational outreach campaigns, cause-related social
marketing and integrated communications.

Since its inception in July 2007, the VA Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1
800-273-TALK, has rescued more than 3,000 Veterans and provided
counseling for more than 120,000 Veterans and their loved ones at home
and overseas. The lifeline is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week
by trained mental health professionals prepared to deal with immediate
crises.

Marketing the lifeline through mass transit campaigns was piloted in the
Washington D.C. area during the summer of 2008 with great success.

VA has also promoted awareness of the toll-free number through national
public service announcements featuring actor Gary Sinise and television
journalist Deborah Norville. The bus advertisement and public service
announcements are available for download via YouTube and at
